The words for the verses were written on Karine and Boo’s Arvon course. Karine helped me with the last verse. Again, no credit, I’ll buy her another Cadillac when it’s a hit.
Some of my fellow participants tried a melody for the song but I wasn’t satisfied with the outcome so the song rested in my notebook for a while.
A month or two later I was on the phone to Boo. He was a bit down because he’d had to cancel a show. I know that putting melodies to words is something Boo loves doing so I sent him the lyrics. An hour or two later he sent back a recording of the song, performed on ukulele, complete with a chorus.
Although the song is now about Harry Houdini, when I started it I was using escape artist imagery to view the troubled life of Amy Winehouse: the idea of giving the audience something astounding, beautiful and personal and then the media machine says ‘Okay. That’s great. What’s next? We want more and bigger and better and more and...’
